Evaluation of 'The Silent Pool'

Evaluation of 'The Silent Pool'

The ways that we developed and challenged forms and conventions was to make our film into a horror/thriller hybrid. We made our film horror-like by having the colours all in black and white apart from the death scene, that we physically showed like horrors do that where in blood red. We also used aspects of a thriller by having it fast pace, highly intensified and hid certain aspects from the audience.

To change several hours into several minutes by using cross-cutting for example when cut from the Facebook scene directly into the woods allowing the audience to make the judgement that time had past. We used cross-cutting following the “Grammar of the edit” to indicate two things happening in two different parts of the woods. We made errors for example in our bench scene that was unrealistic and corrupted of sound that we had to totally edit out and come up with new ideas to indicate to the audience what was happening in the woods.
We improved on our preliminary task as we did not have such shaky filming and this made our production seem more professional. We had more effective effects and had a steadier camera shot.
Looking back I can see that I improved in my skills vastly before my camera shots where shakey and without variation also my effects where unrealistic and almost tacky but now my shots are steady and have many different angles and types of shots as well as I was now knowledgable about the effects programme on Imovie HD
On a Macro level we have worked with a much broader level then on our Preliminary Task as in our Prelimanary task we only had three shots to do whereas in our film we had complete scope in our angle shots and my group and I took full advantage of this
We forfilled the audience's typical expectation of a Horror/Thriller Hybrid and purposely did not parody the film in order to make the film more realistic and effective and bring "shock factor" to the audience.

We have references to other films in some of our shots for example the documentery style of The Blair Witch Project, The Last Broadcast and the recent previews of Paranormal Activity all in the film genre Horror. We also took our location basis and references to corrupt teenagers from Eden Lake that is an Horror/Thriller hyrbrid movie simular to ours.
My group are confident about the "shock" factor of our movie bringing pleasure to the audience. We feel that we deliver on this promise and combined the "stock" factor typical of the Horror genre and the mysterie that surrounds a typical Thriller genre.
Media institutions that may distribute ‘The Silent Pool’ could be E4, a low budget British television company that appeals to a youthful audience, the same audience that ‘The Silent Pool’ appeals to. The company has produced the TV Film ‘Dead Set’ as a horror genre and could fund ‘The Silent Pool’ as it has similar “shock” factors that appeal to a youthful market or ‘The Silent Pool’ could go down the route that our style model ‘Eden Lake’ took of having a low budget British producer like Rollercoaster Films but being funded by an American company for example The Weinstein Company and having limited realise in Cinemas
Our group met often during lesson times and around school and also used a variety of technology in order to communicate with each other.
We had to escort our actors alongside roads and this caused problems in the planning we overcame this by safely having multiple lifts to pick people up.
My group and I chose not to have too many props and costumes as not to overcomplicate things in our low budget film we did purposely have different outfits in the woods scene in comparison to the school scenes to show time passing. We took our basic storyline from the storyboard but did not include any dialoque from it instead we chose to breif our actors on what is happening and key lines in the plot but the rest of the dialoque is improvised in order to make our film more realistic without having lines.
I have learnt a huge amount about the process of creating opening movie scenes. I have learnt how to keep a steady shot and what angles look good and how to do shots like shot reverse shot and match-on-action. I have learnt how to effectivly implant microphone recordings into my production for example having the ghostly breathing sound as 'Lucy' dies

as well as using editing resources to make my film appear more realistic/effective. I have used tools that are closer to industry standards (Imovies HD) and tools that are not (Torch to get the scene lighter) and worked them so they have effect. The digital technology enabled me to develop creativly by adding in effects that could not be people-made but could be computer processed helping me get my ideas into a production that looked realistic although at first it obstructed our production by having too many effects and my group and I where impressed by these and this, at first, made our production look slightly silly
Our audience would be for a youth market we appealed to them by having all of our actors as teenagers in order to the audience to relate to our movie we decided to do this in our initial breif as well as creating an questionaire that we directed to our peers and used this questionaire in order to help our production we found out about youth-type thrillers and youth-type horrors and did research into this. We had continuiety by having fade outs to show time passing and although we did not have movie time pass as real time passed we still showed this effectivly. When a character said "ill post it on facebook" we showed a screenshot of a picture of facebook to abide to continuiety this is how we showed meaning to the audinece. When we where editing we decided to have the death scene in blood red to tell the audience that the girl is dying, having red to suggest danger, blood and death. In our planning we decided to have a facebook scene in order to appeal to the younger audiences and have a fresh take on the film. When we trialed aspects of our film the audience they said that certain clips where inaudiable so we had to voice over these clips or re-do them entirely this helped our process of our production. The audience also commented on the realism of the film and if thew effects made sense or not and helped our production greatly. Our audience would have to have an understaning of facebook in order to understand our film and why we are going to the woods and this would depend on the cultural situation of the viewer

My media project represented particular social groups like the youth of britain in todays society. my films represents the dangers of groups of young vunreble people going into iscolated areas and has also represented revenge and grudges, the themes in our film and the darkness of woodland areas. We represented youths but did not purposly exclude ethnic minoritys in our films although we did not include any people of ethnic minoritys as our group lives in an area of England that is not multi-cultural and do not represent the rest of the country we have also purposly not represented older people and people without an understanding of modern technology like facebook as we felt our film was directed and a younger audience. We tried to go for a documetery-style realism despite our film being not a documentery or based on anything "real" as well as our film always goes foward in time and does not include flashbacks making it more belivable. We also used a real-life setting and had costumes for particular people in order to make our film beleivable thus making it more shocking. the acting helps the verisimilitude as it is very belivable as all the young actors we used had an interest in drama and had previously had high marks on their GCSE's as well as their improvised dialogue also being beleivable helping the peice to be very naturalistic and 'real' the music and style of camera work add the effect of it being thrilling as the music is fast pace and intense which parellels to the camera work that is also fast pace making the macro levels of the world very realistic and scary.
